The General Command of Ras Al Khaimah Police, represented by the General Directorate of Police Operations and the Comprehensive Police Stations Department, apprehended 19 beggars of various nationalities since the beginning of the Holy Month until today. One of them was found in possession of AED 11000, collected from begging within a single day. This comes as part of Ras Al Khaimah Police’s Ramadan campaign, “Combat Begging and Help Those in Need,” launched by the General Directorate of Police Operations in cooperation with the Media and Public Relations Department, to curb negative behaviors and phenomena that contradict the State’s ethical, social, and cultural values, by combating begging and its associated social and economic risks, in order to preserve the country’s civilized image.
H.E. Brigadier Dr. Tariq Mohammed bin Saif, Director General of Police Operations at Ras Al Khaimah Police, pointed out that beggars exploit people’s compassion and sympathy by taking advantage of the Holy Month of Ramadan, during which individuals are keen to give charity, donations, and perform good deeds in pursuit of mercy and forgiveness. He noted that some unscrupulous individuals misuse this blessed month to generate illicit income by manipulating others’ emotions through fabricated humanitarian stories and by requesting financial assistance to settle debts, fines, legal cases, medical treatment, and other needs, as part of various fraudulent practices.
H.E. Brigadier Dr. Tariq bin Saif affirmed that the “Combat Begging and Help Those in Need” campaign has effectively contributed to apprehending beggars and reducing begging through its comprehensive plans and programs, which annually monitor numerous cases. Accordingly, various forms of begging are studied and assessed on an ongoing basis to address them promptly, ensuring proactive anticipation and handling of fraudulent schemes employed by beggars. He added that official channels for charitable work and humanitarian assistance are available through authorized charitable organizations and institutions to ensure that donations reach their rightful beneficiaries. He urged community members to donate through these official channels and to avoid dealing with beggars who habitually engage in begging and unlawfully earn money.
